Hawking radiation

Hawking radiation is a radiative effect around black holes predicted by Stephen Hawking in 1974, using quantum mechanics. Although the effect is usually too small to measure, it represents a qualitative disagreement between the predictions of C20th textbook GR and QM, suggesting that at least one of the two theories must be wrong (see: black hole information paradox). The effect is also sometimes referred to as Bekenstein-Hawking radiation.

Although the effect was originally presented as being a purely "quantum" effect, a growing realisation that analogous effects appear in some classical models has led to the effect being recategorised as "semiclassical".
