## Hawking radiation |

**Stephen Hawking**in 1974, using quantum mechanics. Although the effect is usually too small to measure, it represents a qualitative disagreement between the predictions of C20th textbook GR and QM, suggesting that at least one of the two theories must be wrong (

*see:*black hole information paradox). The effect is also sometimes referred to as

**Bekenstein-Hawking radiation**.

Although the effect was originally presented as being a purely "quantum" effect, a growing realisation that analogous effects appear in some classical models has led to the effect being recategorised as "semiclassical".
