[[Hawking radiation]] is a radiative effect around [[black hole]]s predicted by '''Stephen Hawking''' in 1974, using quantum mechanics. Although the effect is usually too small to measure, it represents a qualitative disagreement between the predictions of C20th [[textbook GR]] and QM, suggesting that at least one of the two theories must be wrong (''see:'' [[black hole information paradox]]). The effect is also sometimes referred to as '''Bekenstein-Hawking radiation'''.<br />

Although the effect was originally presented as being a purely "quantum" effect, a growing realisation that analogous effects appear in some classical models has led to the effect being recategorised as "semiclassical".<br />
